Associate Attorney

Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company, Fort Wayne, Indiana is seeking to fill an Associate Attorney position.  The company insures 32,000 churches and ministries in 34 states.  Starting salary is in the $55,000 to $65,000 range, depending on experience and credentials.

Primary functions of this position include review, analysis and drafting of legal documents; legal research; statutory review and coverage analysis.

The position will require approximately 45 hours of work per week.  Individuals hired into this position will have an opportunity to advance in the company based on experience and performance.

The individual who fills this position will be responsible for assisting with legal projects, communicating with company personnel on legal issues, communicating pertinent legal information to external customers, undertaking statutory review, and may also be involved in resolving moderate to complex insurance claims.

The primary functions of this position include, but are not limited to, review, analysis and drafting of legal documents; legal research; and the application of statutes, common law and other legal concepts to various legal projects; analyzing complex claims issues; and traveling as needed to settlement conferences, mediation events and training programs.

Education: 

*     A Bachelor's degree and JD degree are required.

Experience:

Must possess:
*     Strong analytical and legal drafting skills
*     Effective written and oral communication skills
*     A sound knowledge of tort, contract, corporate and insurance law
*     The ability to handle confrontational situations in a positive way
*     Computer skills necessary to access, input and retrieve information

In addition:
*     Previous experience in corporate law, statutory review, contract drafting or other legal document preparation would be beneficial
*     Previous in-house corporate legal experience, particularly within an insurance company, would be beneficial

Because the company's niche is the church and related ministries market, and because effective service requires a thorough understanding of this market, persons in this position must be familiar with church operations, and must conduct themselves in a manner that will neither alienate nor offend persons within this target niche.  The person in this position will work at the company\'s home office in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Executive Director

Hawaii Family Forum (HFF), a non-profit, pro-family education organization committed to family-friendly policies in Hawaii and its community partner, the Hawaii Catholic Conference (HCC), the public policy arm of the Roman Catholic Church in Hawaii are seeking an individual to serve as Executive Director of both organizations.  Attorney candidates desired.

The HFF Executive Director works under the supervision of the HFF Board and as the HCC Director reports to the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese or his designate, the Vicar General.  The Director works on a wide range of pro-family issues, including, but not limited to:  sanctity of life, traditional marriage preservation, family values, adoption promotion, child protection, religious freedom, poverty and social justice.  The Director represents both organizations to the legislature, churches and community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of HFF including financing, operations, government relations, community and public relations, and grassroots development.  Oversee one staff person.
  • Direct and implement, with HFF Board, a development strategy involving business leaders, church support and individual donors;

Legislative Education & Advocacy

  • Preparing and delivering testimony on pending legislation before state legislative committees;
  • Researching and drafting legislative memoranda on bills and proposed administrative rules and regulations affecting the family;
  • Participating as the HFF representative in meetings of ad hoc legislative coalitions;

Public & Community Relations

  • Working with local media including writing articles for newsprint and being interviewed on TV promoting the family-friendly perspective on issues;
  • Working with Pastors and church members of all denominations to educate and prepare them for faithful citizenship and participation in the electoral and legislative processes, including testifying at legislative public hearings.

Applicants should have significant background and experience on family issues and experience working on legislative matters.  Law degree desired.  Candidate must have excellent writing and speaking skills, a demonstrated ability to analyze and effectively communicate, an understanding of issues relating to law, public policy and the legislative process, and the capacity to organize and work with coalitions to achieve legislative goals.  Applicants must be able to work comfortably and amiably with a wide cross-section of legislators and constituents from diverse backgrounds.  Applicants must demonstrate the ability to communicate with clarity and charity even in confrontational and divisive situations. Writing samples required.
