2007 NATIONAL CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS & SCHEDULE
THURSDAY

4:30 – 6:00 pm              Workshop Session I

A.  CLE - First Amendment Establishment & Free Exercise Clauses:  Recent Developments

A review of the year's major decisions and developments affecting religious liberty and a look at what's on the horizon.  

B.  CLE - Estate Planning and Drafting for the Faithful

Practical discussion of estate/charitable planning resources -- beginning to advanced practitioners; Ethical issues in estate planning; Exploration of integrating Biblical principles in estate planning practice?  

C.      Taming of the Shrewd: The Mind of Jesus in the Life of the Law–

"Shrewdness" is always affirmed in Jesus' four uses of the term.  How does Jesus redeem cunning, craftiness and shrewdness - for our legal profession?

 

FRIDAY

3:00 – 4:30 pm              Workshop Session II

A.      Christian Legal Aid  

This is a practical, hands-on introduction to a unique form of legal aid in which lawyers, law students and paralegals are motivated and helped to respond to God’s high priority call to provide legal and spiritual help to the poor and homeless.

B.      God Outside the Box:  A Fresh Perspective on Life and Law in a Global Context

The strategy of Jesus was to encourage the formation of small bands of committed friends. Over 100 national Christian lawyers groups are using this strategy globally. Come and hear their stories.

C.  CLE - Truth and Freedom: The Foundations of Christian Advocacy

This workshop will explore whether Christian lawyers are morally responsible for their clients' actions. Going beyond the standard question, "can a Christian defend a guilty person," participants will consider the role of Truth and freedom in their faith and their practice.

D.  CLE - Sanctity of Life Update

Does the Supreme Court's decision in Gonzales v. Carhart matter?  Did it create new opportunities for regulating abortion?  This workshop will address these and other questions about abortion law. 

E.  CLE – Non-Profit Organizations:  How the 2006 Pension Protection Act Changes the Landscape

The law governing nonprofit organizations and charitable contributions changed in 2006, more dramatically than at any time since 1969.  This will help anyone representing charities, foundations, or donors.

 

4:45 – 6:15 pm              Workshop Session III

A.   Experiencing Protection: Couples Workshop I

Learn how God's protective love, in an environment of grace, can transform your marriage, family and every relationship in your life.  Part 1 of 2.

B.  Clients, Conflict & Christ

Every attorney has the opportunity to help their client address conflicts, whether in the courtroom or advising them regarding business transactions, estate planning or personal issues.  This workshop will address three basic questions regarding the service we provide to our clients as Christian attorneys.

C.  For the Health of the Nation:  NAE’s Seven Principles of Christian Civic Engagement

Why did the National Association of Evangelicals articulate seven civic, Biblical principles?  Can they evaluate political platforms, parties, candidates?  Do we raise ante now? 

D.      CLE – Grafted Branches on the Family Tree:  Adoption and Alternative         Reproduction Technology Law

This workshop is intended to introduce the general practitioner to adoption and alternative reproduction technology law, and will include presentations on international adoption, agency adoption, independent adoption, embryo adoption, and surrogacy, with an emphasis on ethical practice and ministry opportunities. 

E.      CLE – Practicing Family Law from a Christ-Centered Perspective

This workshop will focus on integrating our Christian faith into the practice of Family Law in the areas of custody, spousal maintenance, child rearing, and religious issues.   

 

SATURDAY

10:15 – 11:45 am           Workshop Session IV

A.      Life Together:  The Role of Friendships and Study Groups in Nurturing Spiritual Growth Among Lawyers

This workshop will explore how spending time together with fellow lawyers in spiritual friendships and small study groups can be the means to deepening our personal relationship with Christ and the practical working-out of our calling to serve others through the legal profession.

B.      CLE - Transactions for the Non-Profit Organization: Special Considerations and Pitfalls to Avoid

A primer for corporate and nonprofit lawyers on how key nonprofit rules and considerations impact nonprofit organizations' participation in business transactions and ventures. 

C.      CLE - Criminal Law from the Biblical Prospective:  Why You Can’t Do Without the Bible

This workshop will focus on integrating Biblical truths into all aspects of the practice of criminal law.  Workshop participants will receive the latest information on restorative justice and other information on rehabilitation programs to aid our clients.

D.  CLE - Truth and Freedom: The Foundations of Christian Advocacy

B.  CLE - First Amendment Free Speech and Association:  Trends and Challenges

A brief overview of recent developments in Free Speech and Expressive Association law and the challenges these developments pose for defenders of religious liberty.

C.  CLE - Estate Planning and Drafting for the Faithful

Practical discussion of estate/charitable planning resources -- beginning to advanced practitioners; Ethical issues in estate planning; Exploration of integrating Biblical principles in estate planning practice?  

D.  CLE – Representing Immigrants in a Shifting Legal Landscape:  Immigration Options for Undocumented Aliens  

Was the City of Hazleton right to penalize undocumented immigrants? This workshop explores immigrants' rights under federal laws and their Supremacy Clause implications.  

E.  CLE – Employment and Volunteer Legal Hotspots for Churches and NonProfits 

This workshop will discuss employment and volunteer issues as well as other legal hotspots for churches and ministries including seven ways to keep your church out of court.

 

3:45 – 5:15 pm              Workshop Session VI

A.      Seven Last Words on Leadership:  A Christ-Centered Approach to Leadership in Impossible Situations

At some point in our lives, most of us will face a situation at home, in the workplace, in our practice, or at church that will appear intractable, with no possibility of a satisfactory solution.  This discipleship workshop will equip you with principles from the life and death of Jesus that will enable you to exercise leadership as Jesus would in impossible situations.

B.  Taming of the Shrewd: The Mind of Jesus in the Life of the Law

C.      CLE - Sexually Oriented Businesses:  Regulation and Litigation -

While sexually oriented businesses are proliferating nationwide and threatening children and their communities, there are affirmative steps that can be taken to limit that damage. 

D.  CLE - Anticipating a Suit Before the Ink is Dry:  Issues Related to Drafting Agreements and How They Impact Litigation

A practical workshop intended to assist those who draft contracts view and hopefully safeguard the agreement from a litigation point of view.
