ICLS ANNOUNCES NEW DISTANCE COURSE

"PHILOSPHY OF LAWYERING"

SPRING SEMESTER 2003

This semester, ICLS is offering a distance course on the fundamentals of what it means to be a "Christian Lawyer." The course is offered for credit at two Christian universities. ICLS plans to offer it again next spring.

"Philosophy of Lawyering" is a three-hour course taught via the Internet. The course will focus on (1) the importance of a religious and theological understanding of the issues of work, calling, and law; (2) the sources and nature of law and justice; (3) the role of lawyers in the American justice system; and (4) biblical thinking about what lawyers actually do.

In short, the purpose of the course is to examine the nature, source, and implications of the lawyer's calling.

The course will highlight the relationship between law and theology and demonstrate how one's view of the nature of law justifies preferred legal regimes and particular legal rules. The course will also encourage students to think critically about specific legal rules and schools in light of biblical principles. Finally, the course will provide some insight into the nature and methods of law school for those interested in the law as an occupation.

Instructor:

Professor Mike Schutt, Associate Professor at Regent University School of Law, will teach this course via the Internet. Professor Schutt is the Director of the Institute for Christian Legal Studies, and this course is part of the Institute's mission to educate and encourage pre-law and law students to seek biblical truth as they study the law. Professor Schutt has taught at Regent Law School since 1993.
