Supreme Court Will Hear Religious Liberty Case
On Monday, May 19, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will review a lower court decision that the State of
Washington violated a student's First Amendment rights by forbidding him to use a state scholarship to support his
training in theology at a Christian college. The case is Locke v. Davey.
Center Files Comments with President's Bioethics Council
The Center filed comments today with President Bush's Council on Bioethics, Human Cloning and Dignity. The comments
discuss such issues as the FDA's authority to regulate cloning and the patenting of human life. Full text of the
comments will be available shortly on the CLS web site at Bioethics Council.
Center Director Debates Religious Staffing Rights on CNN
Center Director Greg Baylor appeared on CNN's Financial News Network on May 14 to argue that religious social service
providers should not be required to give up their religious identity in order to serve the poor and needy with government
support. A representative from Americans United for Separation of Church and State was on the other side of the debate.
On May 8, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Workforce Reinvestment and Adult Education Act of 2003 (H.R.
1261), which would eliminate a rule that forbids religious groups participating in certain Department of Labor programs
from using faith-based criteria in selecting their employees.
