Center Sues New Jersey School District Seeking Equal Treatment of Bible Club
The Center filed suit on Friday seeking equal treatment for a Child Evangelism Fellowship Bible club whose flyers were
censored by a New Jersey school district. In January, CEF's application for meeting space to hold its weekly Good News
Club was approved by the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District, but with conditions not imposed on secular
groups. CEF was not permitted to post flyers, participate in "back-to-school nights," or have parental permission slips
distributed to students.
After further requests for equal treatment proved unsuccessful, the Center filed suit in the District Court for the
District of New Jersey (Camden Division) on May 2. (More Info.)
Center Files Appeal with 4th Circuit in Flyer Distribution Case
The Center is appealing a decision by a Maryland federal court preliminarily denying a Child Evangelism Fellowship
Bible club the right to have parental permission slips included in packets sent home with students. The Center brought
suit against Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools on January 17 after the District denied CEF privileges given to
other community groups. CEF's appeal was filed on May 1. (More Info.).
Supreme Court Asked to Review Pledge Ruling
On April 20, the Department of Justice asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Ninth Circuit ruling that the
inclusion of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance violates the First Amendment's Establishment Clause.
The Center submitted a "friend of the court" brief to the Ninth Circuit, and will file a brief with the Supreme Court,
urging it to take the case and reverse the Ninth Circuit's decision. (More Info.)
