Annapolis Area Christian School/
Maryland Health and Higher Educational Facilities Authority
Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) has been working for over 30 years to
help Children develop godly character through Christian education. In
early 2002, they applied for tax-exempt bond financing through the Maryland
Health and Higher Educational Facilities Authority. The funds were to be
used for a new high school campus. Although the Authority is responsible
for helping schools borrow money for construction projects like this, they
denied AACS’ request because of its religious nature.
AACS contacted the CLS Center for assistance, and we contacted the Authority
in September 2002, explaining that the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause
does not require government entities to discriminate against religious
schools and the First Amendment actually supports AACS’ right to equal
treatment.
On Tuesday, March 5, 2003, the Authority’s board unanimously approved a $25
million bond for AACS. This financing will save AACS an estimated $250,000
in interest charges over the life of the bond.
