Christian Legal Society v. Sorenson In February 2008 Center brought a lawsuit on behalf of the Christian Legal Society and the Christian Legal Society chapter at the University of South Carolina School of Law, challenging the University of South Carolina's prohibition on granting funds to religious student organizations. The Center argued that this restriction was unlawful viewpoint discrimination. In response to the Center's complaint, the University lifted its prohibition against funding religious student groups. This change in policy protects all religious student organizations at the University, including the CLS chapter, from viewpoint discrimination in funding. Furthermore, in June 2008 the University agreed to implement further changes to its funding policies, consistent with recommendations from Center attorneys, to ensure viewpoint neutrality in the future distribution of funds to student organizations. The University also put a moratorium on granting new funds until these reforms are completed in the fall 2008 semester.
