GREGORY S. BAYLOR

Gregory S. Baylor, Esquire: Mr. Baylor is Director of Christian Legal Society’s Center for Law and Religious Freedom, which defends religious liberty and the sanctity of human life through litigation, friend of the court briefs, legislative advocacy, and educating attorneys and the general public. He has represented parties in dozens of religious freedom cases, including Colorado Christian University v. Baker, Christian Legal Society v. Walker, Pedreira v. Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, DeBoer v. Village of Oak Park, and Culbertson v. Oakridge School District. He has presented oral argument to the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Seventh, Ninth, and Tenth Circuits. Mr. Baylor has represented amici curiae before the U.S. Supreme Court in numerous cases, including FAIR v. Rumsfeld, Gonzales v. O Centro Espirita, Locke v. Davey, Zelman v. Simmons-Harris, Good News Club v. Milford Central School, Rosenberger v. Rector of the University of Virginia, and Hurley v. Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Group of Boston. He has testified before Congress; appeared on National Public Radio, ABC News This Week, CNN, and Hardball with Chris Matthews; and has been quoted in many major news publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Washington Times, Baltimore Sun, San Francisco Chronicle, Houston Chronicle, and Cleveland Plain Dealer. He has delivered presentations at Yale Law School, the University of Chicago School of Law, American University Washington College of Law, Wheaton College, George Fox University, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, California Baptist University, Huntington University, Greenville College, Gordon College, Dordt College, Calvin College, Union University, and Southern Nazarene University.
Mr. Baylor is a 1987 graduate of Dartmouth College and received his J.D. degree from Duke University in 1990. He graduated with high honors and is a member of the Order of the Coif. After graduating from law school, Mr. Baylor clerked for Judge Jerry E. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Houston. He also practiced with Fulbright & Jaworski in Austin, Texas, and with Seyfarth, Shaw, Fairweather & Geraldson in Washington, D.C. In both firms, he focused on labor and employment law and litigation. He joined the Center staff in 1994 and was named Director in 2001. Mr. Baylor lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and two daughters.
