Donovan v. Punxsutawney Area School Board
A student-led Bible club at the Punxsutawney Area High School sued the school district after being denied the right
to meet during the school's "Activities Period." Although a number of other student clubs hold meetings during this
period, the school refused to allow the Bible club to meet on the grounds that its activities are religious. The club
was also denied the right to publicize its meetings by posting flyers around the school.
The Federal District Court considered the "Activities Period" to be instructional time and ruled in favor of the
District. The case is on appeal in the Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. The Center filed a friend-of-the-court
brief on December 19, 2002.
